Obituary of ALFRED DONALD WHELLAN

Don Whellan, of Westfield NJ and North Egremont MA, passed away on October 20, 2021 at the age of 90. Beloved husband of Tanya Katz Whellan, loving father to Robyn Mack (Scott), Erica Resnikoff (Len), devoted Poppy to Rachel Kolsky (Joshua), Emily Mack, Henry Resnikoff, Annie Resnikoff, and Kathryn Resnikoff. Proud great grandfather to James Kolsky. Born and raised in the Bronx, he graduated from The High School of Music and Art in Manhattan in 1948. An accomplished clarinetist, at 18 he became a member of the Kansas City Philharmonic. After receiving his draft notice, he joined The United States Air Force Band. Afterwards, he attended Manhattan School of Music, and Columbia University Teachers College. He worked for the Cranford Board of Education for over 40 years. Don continued to perform in and conduct local orchestras in New Jersey, and during the summer months, in the Berkshires. Don volunteered his time to various community service organizations, including the Westfield Rescue Squad, B’nai B’rith, and The Westfield Bridge Club.
