Obituary of ALLAN R LICHTENSTEIN

Allan Lichtenstein, 71, died peacefully with his family by his side in the early hours of August 14, 2020. Allan's immediate family held a private graveside burial service on Sunday, August 16, 2020. A service for family and friends will be held in Highland Park, New Jersey in mid-September. Allan was born in Cape Town, South Africa and lived in Israel for fifteen years before relocating to New Jersey in the summer of 1986. Allan graduated from the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa, he received a Masters Degree in Urban Planning from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel and a Doctorate in Urban Planning from Rutgers University. He previously worked for the Port Authority of NY/NJ as well as the Edward Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. Since 2006, Allan worked for the Poverty Research Institute at the Legal Services of New Jersey. His work and research can be viewed on their website. Allan also served on the Board of the RCHP Affordable Housing Cooperation which provides affordable housing and supportive services to low-income families in central New Jersey. Allan enjoyed reading, writing, photography, playing tennis, researching genealogy, and biking. In 2019, he completed both the NYC Five-borough bike ride and the NYC Century Ride. Most of all, Allan loved spending time with his family and loved ones. He prioritized family above all else and will be sadly missed by his children, Edan and Merav Lichtenstein, his partner for the last seventeen years, Patricia Dunphy, and her daughter, Claudia Mapleli, his son-in-law Jonathan Purow, his granddaughters, Sophie and Lilah Purow, his sister Anthea Koch, his children's mother, Myrna Frank, and all of his relatives who reside around the world. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Thelma Lichtenstein, and his brother-in-law, Yitzchak Koch.
