Obituary of LUCY ELLEN LEVITZ

Lucy Ellen Levitz passed away at Spring Hills Assistant Living Home off of De Mott Lane in Somerset, NJ she was 86.
Born on October 3, 1933 in Paris France to Irving & Jacqueline Katz along with her one and only surviving sister Jeannine.
Her father was in the fur trade and married his wife in France undecided to where they would live. Settling in New York
City in the Bronx along with the outbreak of WW2. Lucy along with her older sister Jeannine, were placed on a ship
leaving France to the United States and both sailed for two weeks on the SS Ile de France that arrived at Ellis Island.
Lucy & Jeannine sailed in the nursery section of the ship guided by nurses that ran the department. Lucy arrived to
America at age 21/2 yrs. old. The Katz family settled at 2300 Bronx Park East opposite Bronx Park living on the sixth
floor in Apt. 6M. Mom's earliest memories were for her love of cats and spent many fun days playing with stray kittens
in the alley of the apartment building. She attended PS 96 and wanted to study astrology. By the high school years
she attended Music & Art High School where she learned the trade of drawing, painting and became fascinated with
Ancient Egyptian & Greek art of wanting to becoming an artist. She finally landed in the study of education and became
a school teacher in the New York City school system. Mom enjoyed travelling with friends to Mexico and other parts of
Europe and she loved seeing Italy. She was married in June 1961 to her husband Louis Levitz (1930-2016) who worked
for the U.S. Federal Government and was a survivor of 9/11. She bore one son and had one nephew and the family
moved in 1973 to North Brunswick, NJ and remained active in the township for the next forty years. She taught resource
room at North Brunswick Twp. High School and eventually went back to school to getting her degree in special education
where she would teach in the Elizabeth, NJ school system. Lucy loved the theater and loved the opera; two best loved
operas that she enjoyed were Carman & Aida as well as seeing many Broadway shows and meeting actors at the back
stage of the theater. She enjoyed reading and loved good gourmet food and was an excellent cook and loved baking.
She loved children and people of all ages and she had a big heart and loved helping people as she was very generous
in helping people who were less fortunate than most. She was a big animal lover. Cats being her favorite. Retiring in
2009 she would become widowed after her husband passed away from Alzheimer's and six months after his passing
she become ill with Dementia and Cancer residing at Princeton hospital and then to Merrick Rehab Center where she
would reside at Spring Hills. Surviving Lucy Levitz is her one and only son Laurence J. Levitz also known as "Larry" of
North Brunswick, her sister Jeannine Coleman of Kendall Park, her nephew Benjamin D. Coleman of Queens, New York
and another nephew Gary Katz of Brooklyn & Israel. Funeral was under the direction of the Goldstein Funeral Home in
Edison, New Jersey. Conducted by Rabbi Mendy Carlbach and spoken highly by her son Larry. Burial took place at
Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus, New Jersey.
