Sherry Gloria Rucker
May 25, 1951 - March 18, 2018
Sherry Gloria Rucker passed away peacefully on March 18, 2018 at St. Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ after a long courageous battle with myelofibrosis, a debilitating bone marrow disease. Sherry was born in Brooklyn, NY to Deborah and Morton Rucker on May 25, 1951. Sherry lived in many different states including New York, Florida, New Jersey, Colorado, Virginia, Michigan and Nova Scotia, Canada. Her last place of residence was Somerset, NJ.
Sherry attended a number of colleges, first getting a B.A. in Psychology from San Jose State University, CA, and then getting a Computer Programming Certificate in 1983 from E.C.P.I of Tidewater in Florida. In 1994, Sherry received a B.S. in Nursing, from Rutgers University. Sherry volunteered and worked at several different health clinics and hospitals in Michigan, Florida and Virginia before having a long career as a Software Quality Engineer at Bellcore and Lucent Technologies.
Sherry inherited her mother and step-father’s love of art, music and nature. Sherry was always finding another flower to admire, bird to listen to, or animal to love. Sherry was also actively involved in many civil, women’s and animal rights organizations. Friends, neighbors and co-workers all remember Sherry’s deep sense of compassion and her passion for justice.
Preceded in death by her mother Deborah, step-father Aaron, father Morton and sister Trudy, Sherry is survived by her daughter Dayna Rucker, son-in-law Luis Quinteros, cherished grandchildren Deysi and Sofia, along with step-sister Andrea and her family, brother-in-law Bill, nephew Noah and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service for Sherry is being planned for August 2018 where friends and family can remember Sherry’s life together. Anyone wishing to make a donation in her memory may do so at the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (http://njspca.org/).
