HARLAN MARCUS Obituary

Harlan Marcus, 83, passed away on March 18, 2026, in Manalapan, NJ.

Harlan is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Marianne Marcus; his daughter Mindy Schwartz and son-in-law Steve; his son Alan Marcus and daughter-in-law Marci; and his three beloved grandchildren, Zachary Schwartz, Jeremy Marcus, and Hayden Marcus, who knew him as “PopPop.”

Born on February 6, 1943, in Amsterdam, NY, Harlan built a life defined by hard work and deep devotion to his family. He met the love of his life, Marianne, on a blind date on Christmas Eve – a story he always enjoyed sharing – and together they built a marriage grounded in love and partnership.

Harlan was a computer systems analyst and consultant at a time when the field was still in its early days. Through his work with HalMar Technical Concepts and beyond, he helped shape the foundations of modern computing – long before “coding” became a common term.

He had a lifelong love of sports, from playing competitive softball to developing a true passion for golf later in life. The golf course became one of his favorite places to be, especially when spent with friends. He was also a devoted fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants.

A number of years earlier, after undergoing quintuple bypass surgery, Harlan volunteered at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, offering support to others going through similar experiences – reflecting the compassion that defined how he lived.

More than anything, Harlan will be remembered for his warmth, patience, wit, and generosity. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who brought joy and comfort to those around him. As “PopPop,” he took great pride in his grandchildren and loved being part of their lives.

Harlan will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
