Arthur Flexser passed away September 2, 2025 at his home in Upper Montclair, NJ. He was born on December 29, 1944 and spent his childhood and youth in Upper Montclair, NJ, with many summers at Saylor’s Lake in Pennsylvania. He was a brilliant student and graduated from Montclair High School in 1963 with a Merit Scholarship. He graduated from Columbia University in 1967. He taught high school physics for a few years, then entered the graduate program in psychology at Stanford University, earning his doctorate in 1976. With a National Institute of Mental Health postdoctoral fellowship, Arthur then undertook research in theoretical aspects of memory at the University of Toronto, beginning a fruitful collaboration with his prominent advisor there, Endel Tulving, that lasted into the 1990s. He was an excellent mathematician, and he quickly engaged with the rapidly developing integration of computer-based analyses into the sciences, becoming an adroit programmer. Several of his publications apply computational work and mathematical statistics to research on how memory works. In 1978, he became a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at Florida International, retiring in [2005-2010]. Arthur was a skilled pianist, playing keyboard in a high school band and, for several years after his retirement, in a jazz band in clubs in northern New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha (Boshie) Simberloff Flexser, and his father, Leo Flexser. His survivors include several devoted cousins and close friends, who remember him for his loyal friendship and his understated yet scintillating wit.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Arthur’s designated charities, Brennan Center for Justice and the Innocence Project, Inc.
