Obituary of ELEANOR SLATE

Eleanor Slate

(March 27, 1941 – February 26, 2025)

Eleanor Slate, a devoted mother, grandmother, and lifelong New Yorker, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025 at Jack D. Weiler Hospital, Bronx, NY.

She was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to Ephraim and Ida Smith and moved with her family to the Van Cortlandt Park South neighborhood in The Bronx as a young girl. She attended Walton High School before earning a degree in social work from City College of New York.

Eleanor was a dedicated stay-at-home mother in her children’s early years. However, when she became a single mother, she entered the banking industry to support her family and ensure that her children had the opportunity to pursue higher education. Her perseverance and resilience allowed her to build a successful career while always prioritizing her children’s future.

In her free time, Eleanor loved painting, crafting, and the thrill of a great shopping find. She had a keen eye for beauty and a deep appreciation for creativity, which she shared with those around her.

She is survived by her daughter, Debra Slate, and her son, Alan Slate, along with his wife, Nancy. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Allison, Lillian, and Catherine. She was predeceased by her sister, Sheila Goldberg (née Smith), who passed away at the age of 59.

Eleanor will be remembered for her strength, determination, and the deep love she had for her family. Her memory lives on in the lives she touched.
